One of my favorite quotes is by Gretchen Rubin, "what you do every day matters more than what you do once in a while." It's the consistent daily tasks that make up your routine, which makes up your life.
Making small, positive, lifestyle adjustments slowly but surely will improve your life, both physically and mentally.
Here Are 10 Little Changes You Can Make That Will Improve Your Life:
1. Shop Local.
Not only is shopping locally better for the environment by reducing your carbon footprint, food sourced locally is more nutrient dense and helps you to eat within the seasons. Shopping at your local farm stand or participating in a CSA will encourage healthier eating.
2. Utilize Reusable Shopping Bags.
It's surprising more people don't make this simple switch! Plastic bags are extremely harmful to the environment, and is a huge threat to sea life. With the beautiful and inexpensive totes they offer right at the front register, there really is no excuse. Even store a few extra in your car for emergencies!
3. Switch to Mason Jars.
Drinking from glass mason jars, rather than plastic cups, and storing your leftovers in glass, rather than plastic, can help reduce ingestion of toxic chemicals. BPA (bisphenol A) is a chemical found in some plastics that the FDA has recognized as hazardous to your health.
4. Choose Wool Dryer Balls Over Dryer Sheets.
Did you know that fabric dryer sheets are full of chemicals that could be potentially toxic to your health? Invest in a set of wool dryer balls like the ones shown here instead. If you like fragrance that dryer sheets offer, consider adding pure essential oils directly to the dryer balls themselves before each dry.
5. Know Your Beauty Ingredients.
Since the beauty industry is non-regulated, it is up to you to do your own research and choose products that are free from toxins, irritants, carcinogens and hormone disruptors. Beautycounter continues this research daily, banning over 1500 ingredients in their own products, and uses industry-leading screening and testing procedures. You can learn more about the ingredients they do use HERE, and what is avoided on The Never List HERE.
6. Ditch the Perfumes and Switch to Essential Oils.
Perfumes are made up of synthetic chemicals that are causing you more harm than good. Many of these chemicals are known hormone disruptors as well as common allergens. Instead, use pure essential oils, which are natural, aromatic oils derived from the leaves, petals, stems and rinds of plants. These pure oils work with your body to promote health and well-being.
7. Pick a Safer Sunscreen.
Most sunscreens use potentially harmful sun blockers, like oxybenzone and octinoxate. Instead, opt for a broad spectrum sunscreen made with non-nano zinc oxide, an effective mineral, that protects against both UVA and UVB rays. The Sun Protection Collection by Beautycounter offers an incredible selection.
8. Get Moving.
Sitting has now been dubbed the new smoking. Just get up and get moving! Something as simple as a walk improves cardiovascular function, reduces stress, and that momentum helps you to make additional healthier choices. If you have a sitting job, remember to stand up and walk every hour.
9. Toss Your Microwave.
Microwaves are a modern day convenience, but they are not as safe as you may think. It's cooking method distorts food's chemical structure,
10. Cook in Cast Iron.
Cast iron for cooking has a host of health benefits! Not only can it protect you from dangerous chemicals that can leach into your food from non-stick cooking pans in the form of PFOA, it also can fortify your food with trace elements of iron!
